Fern Reel GuideFree play · no real money Coins10,000

A three-game arcade, made in New Zealand

Three casino-style games, played with coins that cost nothing.

Free to play

There is no real money anywhere on this site. Coins are virtual, they arrive free, they top up every day, and they cannot be bought, won as prizes, cashed out or swapped for anything. Nothing here is for sale — the games are the whole product. How the coin balance works

01 / The games

Pick a game and start playing

Each one is a different kind of game with its own setting and its own symbol set, and all three run on the same coin balance shown in the header.

Five reels · five paylines
Line drawing of a five-window reel machine under carnival bunting, with a carousel horse, candy floss, ticket, balloon and popcorn symbols.

Midway Lights

Carnival midway

Five reels across three rows with five fixed paylines. The Bulb Star stands in for any paying symbol, and three or more Big Wheels pay out wherever they land on the grid.

Klondike · draw three
Line drawing of four playing cards fanned across cracked mineral ground with steam curling from two vents behind them.

Steam Vent Solitaire

Volcanic plateau

Full patience with a proper draw-three deck and unlimited passes. Every card you send up to a vent pays coins back straight away, so a layout you cannot finish still returns something.

Card call · true odds
Line drawing of two playing cards on a driftwood plank beside a coiled rope, with up and down chevrons at the left.

Driftwood Hi-Lo

Coastal voyage

Call the next card higher or lower. The multiplier on each button is worked out from the cards actually left in the deck, and your run keeps compounding until you bank it or call one wrong.

Quick start — the three games listed
Game One round takes Time to learn it What you actually do
Midway Lights About ten seconds None needed Choose a stake per line, press spin, read the lines that paid.
Driftwood Hi-Lo Half a minute, longer if a run keeps going A minute or two Look at the card on the plank, call the next one, bank the run when the number suits you.
Steam Vent Solitaire Five to fifteen minutes a layout Ten minutes if patience is new to you Build descending, alternating-colour runs and clear all four suits ace to king.

02 / Why three different games

A small arcade beats one big game

Three games sounds modest, and it is deliberate. Each one asks something different of you, so the arcade covers three moods rather than three coats of paint on the same machine.

Midway Lights is pure chance. The reels are twenty positions long, you choose where to stop nothing, and the only decision is your stake. It suits the times you want a result every ten seconds without thinking about it.

Driftwood Hi-Lo is a judgement game. The deck shrinks as you play and the counts of higher, lower and matching cards sit under the plank, so you can see exactly why calling higher on a four pays less than calling higher on a ten.

Steam Vent Solitaire is skill and patience. Nothing is hidden from you but the face-down cards, and how far you get depends on the order you unpick the columns. Some layouts simply cannot be solved, which is part of Klondike and not a fault in the shuffle.

Learn the mechanics on the game rules page before you play, or work them out as you go — every game screen carries its own rules panel.

One reel game, one card game and one patience layout — the same coin balance runs all three.

03 / Who this is for

Who this site suits

Adults who like the shape of casino games — spinning reels, a card call, a patience layout — and have no interest in staking money on them. If you have ever wanted to see how a five-line slot pays without opening your wallet, this is built for you.

It also suits anyone learning the classic games. Because the coins are worthless, you can make an expensive-looking mistake and lose nothing at all.

It is not for anyone under 18, and it is not a practice ground for real-money gambling. Skill at these games does not transfer, because there is no skill that beats a random reel.

04 / Coins

Where your coins come from

Your first visit starts you at 10,000 coins. A free top-up of 2,500 lands the first time you open the site each day, and if a run of bad luck leaves you under 1,000 the top-up brings you back up to that mark.

Every game screen has a reset control that returns the balance to 10,000 whenever you want it. You cannot get stuck at zero, and there is nothing to buy if you did.

The balance lives in this browser's local storage, so it is yours alone. Clear your site data and it starts again at 10,000 — nothing is stored on a server, and there are no accounts.

05 / Questions

Common questions about playing here

Myth: a reel that has gone cold is due for a payout

It never is. Each spin picks a fresh stop position for all five reels with crypto.getRandomValues, and nothing in the code looks at what happened on the spin before. Twenty dead spins in a row change the twenty-first not at all. The same goes for the cards: every Hi-Lo call is drawn from the deck as it stands, and no result is nudged to keep you playing.

Fact: the maths on the screen is the maths in the code

The Midway Lights paytable, the five payline shapes and the Hi-Lo multipliers are all published on the game screens, and the game does what they say. Hi-Lo works out each multiplier from the cards left in the deck and pays 98 per cent of the true odds, so the house edge is two per cent — of coins that are worth nothing.

Can I buy more coins, or turn coins into money?

No, in both directions. There is no shop, no payment form, no coin bundle and no cash-out. Coins cannot be redeemed, swapped, gifted or withdrawn, and they have no value outside the game screen you are looking at.

Do I need an account to keep my balance?

No. Everything sits in your browser's local storage: the coin balance, the daily top-up date and your own play records. There is no sign-up, no email and no server-side profile, so a different browser or device starts from a fresh 10,000.

Will playing here make me better at real gambling?

No, and we would rather you did not think of it that way. Free social games like these are tuned to be pleasant, and doing well at them says nothing about how a real-money game would treat you. If gambling is on your mind, the responsible play page lists free New Zealand support lines.

The short version, in plain terms

Fern Reel Guide is entertainment software. It is free to play, it uses virtual coins with no monetary value, and it offers no prizes, winnings or rewards of any kind. We are not a gambling operator and not a gambling affiliate, we hold no gambling licence, and no regulator oversees this site — a free social casino is not gambling and is not licensed by anyone.

These games copy gambling mechanics without the money attached. Playing them will not improve your results at real-money gambling, and success here does not predict success there. The site is intended for adults aged 18 and over.
